What are CBD Balms?
CBD balms are topical products infused with CBD oil and other natural extracts. Often thick and creamy in consistency, they can be easily applied onto the skin to target problem areas, such as sore muscles and joints or irritated skin. Unlike CBD oil drops, CBD balms are absorbed by the skin and do not enter the bloodstream, allowing the user to keep the potential benefits of CBD localised to where they’re needed most.
What are CBD balms used for?
CBD oil balms can be used to provide relief from tired, aching muscles and dry, irritated skin. Harnessing the soothing properties of cannabidiol and other natural extracts, CBD balms combine CBD oil with calming active ingredients such as menthol, comfrey and witch hazel to soothe the skin, target pain and relieve tension.

What to look for when choosing a CBD balm?
The CBD industry is still in its infancy, and as a result remains under-regulated. This lack of proper regulation has allowed a large number of poor quality CBD products to enter the market, some of which have misleading label claims and no proof of independent testing. If you’re looking to buy CBD balms, here are six key things to look out for:
- A trusted and reputable brand
- Plant-based CBD
- Legal THC levels (non-detectable)
- Proof of third-party lab testing
- Full list of ingredients
- CBD sourced from organic hemp
Additional ingredients
Discover five key additional ingredients used in our CBD oil balms:
1. Comfrey Extract
Sourced from the roots and leaves of the comfrey plant, this soothing extract is an effective skin conditioner that can help to fight against dry skin and lighten discomfort caused by irritated skin.
2. Caprylic/Capric triglyceride
Made from a combination of either coconut or palm kernel oil and glycerin, caprylic/capric triglyceride is an emollient which traps moisture in the skin and forms a non-greasy protective barrier. High in antioxidants, it is also a dispersing agent which stabilises other ingredients in the formulation.
3. Soybean Oil
Extracted from the seeds of the soybean plant, soybean oil has been shown to support the skin’s natural barrier and help it retain moisture. It is also high in Vitamin E, an antioxidant that may help to protect the skin from oxidative stress.
4. Sweet Almond Oil
Rich in vitamins A and E as well as omega-3 fatty acids, sweet almond oil has long been used to moisturise and rejuvenate the skin while protecting it from oxidative stress. Thanks to its high emollient properties, it can balance the transepidermal water loss from the skin, keeping your skin soft and supple, and can help reduce puffiness under the eyes.
5. Sunflower Seed Oil
Sunflower seed oil is high in linoleic acids, which have powerful hydrating and moisturising effects. Often used for skin conditioning, it can help to maintain a healthy skin barrier, offering added protection against harmful contaminants.

Which CBD should I choose: Topical or oil drops?
The answer to this question depends on your needs. Topical CBD would be the best choice for people looking to soothe aching muscles or irritated skin, as it’s designed to be used on the skin and allows you to keep the CBD balm effects localised to where they’re most needed.
By contrast, CBD oil drops would be better suited to people looking for more generalised or systemic effects. Unlike topical CBD, CBD oil drops enter the bloodstream and influence the body’s endocannabinoid system, a cell-signalling network that regulates vital bodily processes and maintains a balanced internal state (or homeostasis). CBD may support the function of the ECS in keeping the body balanced, making CBD oil drops more suitable for people looking to support their overall wellbeing.
What’s the difference between CBD balm and CBD cream?
The primary difference between CBD balms and CBD creams is their consistency. CBD balms tend to use oil and wax bases, giving them a firmer, thicker consistency, whereas CBD creams use water or another moisturising agent to give them a lighter, more lotion-like consistency. This makes CBD balms particularly well-suited for heavy-duty applications.
There is one exception to this distinction in Naturecan’s CBD balm range: our Joint Balm. Despite the name, our CBD Joint Balm has a thinner, creamier consistency than our other balms to enable it to be easily pumped through a dispenser.
