Signs of Dog Joint Pain

As dog owners, we constantly want our dogs to be happy, confident, and active. Dogs can experience joint pain for various reasons, including ageing, genetics, injuries, or underlying health conditions. Look out for these common signs:

Change in Activity Level

A decrease in overall activity - such as becoming disinterested in playtime or walks - may indicate joint pain. This is often accompanied by increased sleep, reduced exercise duration, or a noticeable slowdown in speed.

Reluctance or Difficulty Moving

Dogs in pain may hesitate to move, especially if they know movement causes discomfort. You may notice them being slow to get up after resting, or struggling to jump onto furniture, climb stairs, or navigate obstacles they previously handled easily.

Limping or Favouring a Leg

If your dog is limping, holding up a leg, or favouring one side while walking, this could signal joint discomfort. Watch out for an altered gait, such as a “bunny hopping” motion in the hind legs.

Behavioural Changes

Joint pain can make dogs irritable or more sensitive to touch. If your dog seems unusually grumpy, reacts negatively when touched in certain areas, or vocalises discomfort through whining or yelping, it may be a response to pain.
